Leading lifeguard training and water safety education charity, the Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK), has today (25 April) launched a brand-new lifesaving award for open water venues - the Open Water Emergency Rescue Award.

The Open Water Emergency Rescue Award has been designed for staff at open water venues who are not directly responsible for lifeguarding the facility, but their roles mean they are in the vicinity, such as café staff, the maintenance team or receptionists. During the course, candidates are taught the theory and practical knowledge required to assist in a rescue and essential lifesaving first aid skills.

Steve Carter, Training Specialist at Telford & Wrekin Council and RLSS UK National Trainer Assessor, who helped develop the course and run the pilot course, said: Open water activities are becoming increasingly popular, so RLSS UK needs to offer rescue awards like this to support lifeguarding teams across our nations. It is great to empower a broader range of staff with lifesaving skills and will enhance the overall safety of those enjoying recreational spaces."

Jo Talbot, Commercial Director of RLSS UK, said: “Here at RLSS UK, we are committed to developing and evolving our award and qualifications portfolio. This award has been launched to reflect the changing requirements of this fast-growing section of the leisure industry, with the support and consultation of our operators that run open water swimming venues or aqua parks. It has been designed so that more team members can be trained in lifesaving skills and support the lifeguarding team if an emergency does occur. Existing RLSS UK Trainer Assessors with the Open Water Lifeguard (OWL) Specialism can also deliver this award after completing a short online module, increasing its accessibility further. We already have significant demand for the award and are looking forward to the courses being hosted across the UK and Ireland.”
