Matthew secured the gold medal in the 10-metre platform diving event at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, becoming the first openly gay male athlete to win an Olympic gold medal and has won multiple world championships and Commonwealth Games medals in diving, showcasing his consistent excellence. Beyond the sport, he is a vocal advocate for LGBTQ+ rights and mental health awareness and published his book ”Twists and Turns” in 2014 covering his own experiences in his professional career, overcoming his struggles with drink and drug misuse and his sexuality.
