This new funding to deliver swimming lessons and access to water safety education is lifesaving for pupils, especially as the accidental drowning rate in Scotland is double that of England*. RLSS UK has a strategic goal to embed vital water safety education into the national curricula across all schools in the UK. In 2024, over 8,000 children completed the RLSS UK’s class-based Water Smart Schools programme. Last year, over 2.3 million children received water safety education during RLSS UK’s Drowning Prevention Week, and a successful RLSS UK led campaign for classroom-based lessons in water safety will be added to England’s curriculum in 2026. Pete Kennedy, Policy and Public Affairs Manager at RLSS UK, said: “We welcome the Scottish Government’s announcement of universal swimming lessons for every child in Scotland. This decision will save lives by ensuring every child has the practical swimming skills to enjoy water safely for a lifetime. We also hope this new funding will support at-risk community swimming facilities, which have been facing growing financial pressures such as rising energy costs.” Download RLSS UK's educational resources *Source: WAID (2018-2024) Manage Cookie Preferences
