The Royal Life Saving Society UK (RLSS UK) has launched two new first aid qualifications to complement their First Aid Essentials suite.

Emergency Outdoor First Aid (EOFA) and Outdoor First Aid (OFA) have been launched to satisfy an increasing demand for first aid qualifications tailored to the outdoor environment. In addition to the content covered in a First Aid at Work (FAW) course, there are sections on pelvic injuries and survival techniques, such as how to call for help and provide emergency shelter effectively.

The training has been designed to prepare for the different challenges when an emergency occurs outside. For example, the patient may need to be cared for longer until the emergency services arrive.

The two new Outdoor First Aid courses have been developed with the support of experts in outdoor learning and the RLSS UK Clinical Governance group to ensure that courses meet the highest standards, are recognised as best practices and are fully ratified. They are ideal for employees primarily working in an outdoor environment, such as outdoor activity centre leaders, outdoor lifeguards, outdoor activity instructors, groundskeepers, or operators.

The two new qualifications are in addition to the First Aid Essentials suite already offered by RLSS UK Qualifications, which includes:

Like RLSS UK’s National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ), the First Aid Essentials qualifications are Level 3 courses. Candidates can earn eight UCAS Tariff points to support their university or further education applications. Candidates can also combine points by completing multiple first aid courses.

Nick Grazier, RLSS UK’s Senior Head of Commercial, said: “We are excited to launch our outdoor first aid qualifications. They are complimentary to other RLSS UK qualifications and awards, and we feel that many of our candidates would benefit from more specialised first aid training that these qualifications offer.”
Gwilym Starks, Founder of Wet and High Adventures Ltd, who ran several pilot RLSS UK Outdoor First Aid courses, said: “It was great to be involved with running several pilot courses for the new RLSS UK Outdoor First Aid qualification. This new course takes the standard first aid skills and adds methods for dealing with the outside realities, such as weather, remoteness and complicated ground. During the pilot courses, we were able to tweak the delivery and content, which has resulted in a finished product that will support outdoor instructors in their work.”
