David Lloyd Clubs, the UK’s leading health and wellness group, has become the first health club group and national leisure operator in the UK to install bleed control kits across all its sites, enhancing public safety ahead of the implementation of Martyn’s Law.

Bleed kits help anyone suffering from severe bleeding, under any circumstances, and this proactive initiative puts David Lloyd Clubs at the forefront of safety preparedness in the fitness sector. The move also aligns with new legislation, officially known as the Terrorism (Protection of Premises) Act 2025.

Following updates from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) and the duties under Martyn’s Law Act, RLSS UK collaborated with its Clinical Governance Group and Operator Steering Group to develop high-quality training resources and an assessment strategy for managing life-threatening bleeding. The Clinical Governance Group advises on clinical and medical practices, while the Steering Group includes industry stakeholders such as Denny. This new training and assessment can now be added as an optional element to RLSS UK’s Emergency First Aid at Work (EFAW), First Aid at Work (FAW), First Aid at Work Requalification (FAWR), and the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification (NPLQ).

Martyn’s Law Act received royal assent on 3 April 2025 to enhance public safety and preparedness at venues and events across the UK. It was introduced following a campaign led by Figen Murray, mother of Martyn Hett, one of the 22 victims of the 2017 Manchester Arena attack.

There will be an implementation period of at least two years before the Act fully comes into force in 2027. David Lloyd Clubs has taken early action with each of its 108 UK clubs now housing a centrally located bleed control kit, sourced from RLSS UK, ensuring quick and easy access for trained staff in the event of a serious injury.

As part of the rollout, the company has added bleed control training to its in-house first aid courses. All duty managers and team members with First Aid at Work qualifications are being trained in how to use the kits, followed by the group’s RLSS UK-trained lifeguards, so that staff have the skills and confidence to respond in an emergency.
